Beyond the Title: The Unseen Impact of Technical Leaders in Deep Tech

What is a technical leader and why are we so fascinated by them?

When we at Enigma People Solutions talk about technical leaders we are not just talking about the obvious CTO, Engineering Manager, Head of an R&D team, or Principal Engineers.

Of course, these are typically the job titles we recruit for but essentially what fascinates us about these people is the impact they have on our clients’ businesses.

The technical leaders in deep tech businesses are significant difference makers. They drive innovation and challenge perceptions of what is possible. They also develop a keen understanding of what is possible. They are experts in their field, highly focussed and passionate about the technology advancements they are working on but also have a keen instinct for what is likely to make commercial sense, they have a strong idea of what culture the team requires and how to build this and have strength of personality that draws people to follow them and believe in them. They are usually relatively understated for all their gifts “confidence is quiet” as Allistair McCaw might say.

A success story.

One of the best examples where we found a technical leader was a few years ago when we were engaged by a start-up client with an executive team and a team of post-doc researchers working on a project. The client needed a technical leader who had expert technical understanding to help develop the technology concept that was being evolved whilst also leading a relatively inexperienced team to deliver a working prototype within a tight timescale. The successful candidate did exactly what was needed and took the prototype team and led them to deliver a working prototype on time, which was a catalyst for triggering significant funding (valued in the tens of millions) to allow the company to grow. What an impact!

In almost all cases the technical leaders we find for clients help move that business forward bringing both technical expertise but also a commercial or people leadership element. Often it is the opportunity to demonstrate their non-technical skills that attracts these candidates to move. Almost always it is the promise of and intrigue in the technology development that excites them.
